Avoiding Bathroom Mildew

When you're trying to sell your house or you're already in the home you love, you want it to look the very best it can and keeping mold or mildew out of the bathrooms is very important.

Whether you call it mildew or mold, the pesky fungus can cause all sorts of trouble in the bathroom. And with hot, humid days in full swing, conditions are perfect for plenty of mildew growth, especially in the bathroom. This summer, keep the home you’re proud to call yours clean with seven simple principles for avoiding mildew.

7 Ways to Avoid Mildew in the Bathroom

Use these easy tips for avoiding mildew to keep your bathroom clean and healthy from the start:
  1. Turn on your bathroom’s ventilating fan before you turn on the shower. After you’re done showering, leave the fan on for 5-10 minutes to rid the room of excess moisture. Mold spores live off moisture and need it to survive and grow.
  2. Give moisture a chance to escape from your bathroom by leaving the door open after your shower.
  3. If you don’t have a fan, crack a window. Since this can be an inconvenience during cold weather, installing a ventilating fan makes for a great investment. Just make sure the fan deposits moisture outdoors instead of inside crawl spaces where mold can flourish.
  4. Like mildew, soap scum can stain bathroom surfaces. Regularly remove soap scum from bathroom surfaces with cleaners such as Mr. Clean® Disinfecting Bath Cleaner or another cleanser of your choice.
  5. Make sure you don’t have any leaky faucets or plumbing in your bathroom. If you’re taking these precautions yet still see mold, there could be a leak in the pipes behind your walls. In this case, mold may have spread to inner surfaces, so call a professional for assistance.
  6. Don’t leave wet towels lying on the bathroom floor. Always hang towels up to dry after a shower and leave the bathroom door open so any remaining moisture can evaporate.
  7. Clean the bottom side of your bath mat at least once a week. Since moisture will build up under the mat, it’s often one of the first places where mildew starts to grow and can go unseen for some time.
It’s easier to avoid mildew and mold than it is to remove it, so be sure to use these seven steps to maintain a bright and beautiful bathroom.
